What is anime? The sake of this post is to answer that question a long with what got me into it and and why I like it. Maybe even clear up a couple of misconceptions along the way. Much like my love for K-pop and Asian Dramas, Anime is something that I get asked about pretty regularly. I personally think that in the vastness of things that I like there are much more bizarre things to ask about. With that said I can understand why people would hone in on things like Anime more. On face value they look unfamiliar because they are from another country with it’s own culture and in a different language. It’s not such a surprise that it can be jarring for some. This kinda stuff is what makes this a prime subject to talk about. relife-anime-teaser-008

So first things first. What IS anime? Simply put it’s Japanese hand drawn or computer animation. Although, to quite a few people it’s weird tentacle monsters, sexualized high school girls, and giant robots. What makes that funny is that when you go on and say that you like anime others will then tell you it’s kids stuff and you shouldn’t like it because of that.  I would think that such differing opinions would be the first clue that anime can be pretty diverse. Instead it apparently means that you either like kids stuff or are a pervert. It’s an interesting dichotomy. I guess I should at least be happy people recognize a range in subject matter. It’s not an entirely accurate one but it does set up a foundation for a point I wanna make. Anime can be for kids and it can be for adults because Anime is a media form just like film/t.v. And guess what?…You can find kids and adult stuff in those too and just like in film/t.v. there is a big middle ground here too.

I have been a fan of anime since my mom introduced me to it as a  little kid. I have fond ssjmemories of watching Dragonball Z in Spanish. For the longest time I thought it was a Spanish cartoon actually. lol Then I caught myself watching it on Cartoon Network. I would watch Sailor Moon, Dragonball Z, and Gundam Wing. I loved the diverse characters and I loved the idea of saving the world from monsters. I pretty much had the same taste in anime until High school. Replacing those former shows with  newer but similar type counterparts like Naruto and Bleach. Even for somebody like me who is into it, I had a limited knowledge of what anime could be at one point. It took me awhile to discover the diverse topics anime could be about. It’s because of this that I don’t fault others for doing the same. Instead of being angry I choose to inform when given the chance. πŸ˜€

The thing that keeps people in the anime fandom for so long is that discovery that anime can be barakamon1cabout so many other things too. So as you mature and your tastes change there will continue to be something for you. It doesn’t have to be all about characters saving the world from monsters, it doesn’t have to be kid stuff, and it doesn’t have to be adult(in the perverted way haha). You can have animes about boxing like Hajime no Ippo, animes centered on musicians like Nodame no Cantabile, and ones like Barakamon which is a personal story of a calligrapher trying to find his own unique style in the world. The point being that there is a story out there for everyone you just have to look. Find something that speaks to

With that I hope you felt I properly expanded on my 3 points. I know I am not the most articulate but this is a subject I really wanted to give my thoughts on. Thank you for reading my ramblings. πŸ™‚

P.S.If you are curious about anime then by all means go to Crunchyroll and check some out. ^_^

    • Keep on watching anime and enjoying it. Eventually people will see the joy it brings you and turn around on it. If they don’t,…well then what does it matter anyway? you will be too busy watching anime to pay attention to their negativity πŸ˜› haha
