My Favorite Drama Trope?

We all have our favorite drama tropes don’t we? Ones that we love seeing time and time CPagain when they are executed well. Take me for example, I like it when a drama centers around a female that finds herself needing to crossdress and pretend to be a guy. Quite a specific one eh? Lol So for this post I wanna go into why it is that I like this. To help me out I am going to use the oh so popular Kdrama Coffee Prince. 😀 It’s one where the trope is in my opinion used to it’s fullest, and it was the one that introduced me to the concept in the first place! So to start things off it only seems fitting that I first tell you a bit about the drama.

Coffee prince for those who don’t know is a romantic comedy that came out in 2007. Almost 10 years ago, crazy to think. 😮 Anyways, it centered around the characters of Choi Han-kyul and Go Eun-chan. Han-kyul was the son of a wealthy family who was looking to get out of his family’s hand picked marriage prospects for him. To do this he hired a guy named Eun Chan. Together they pretended to be a gay couple to scare all those woman away. It was a pretty good idea that worked out as intended. lol Then after a set of circumstances Han-kyul found himself running a coffee shop. Wanting to get the business of women, he decided to hire only good looking men. Another bright idea I guess. 😛 As you may have concluded he ends up hiring Eun chan again. So what is the big deal here…well….Eun Chan is actually a girl! 🙂 Of course he was not privy to that information however.

Based of that when I first started watching the drama this is how I pretty much thought the story would unfold: I thought Eun Chan was gonna fall for Han kyul but that he wouldn’t reciprocate those feelings and look at her as a friend only.  I thought eventually there would be a scene where she would kiss him and maybe he would freak out or something and break off the friendship. Then at some point he would learn that oh yeah she is actually a girl, making him reanalyze the whole relationship. They would then go on to have a happy ending get married and all that jazz. I know I know, I went real far with my speculations. 😛 Either way it didn’t go down like I thought it would and I was pleasantly surprised at where the drama WAS able to take it to.

Coffee Prince 34You see what did happen was that, slowly but surely, Han kyul became conflicted with his feelings for Eun chan. As their friendship grew and they learned more about each other they started to click more and more. Having the most fun when they where with one another and actually looked forward to it. This confused Han Kyul because he didn’t see himself as a gay man because he loved women and had not once been turned on by a man before. Because of this he tried to avoid the situation and end the connection between them but he ultimately couldn’t stay away. The passion was too strong. What ended up happening was one of the most memorable scenes in Kdrama history! Han Kyul confessed to Eun chan.

Despite believing she was a man he confessed. His line was something like,” I like CPkissyou…whether a man..or an alien, it doesn’t matter.” Totally not the route I expected the Korean drama to go. I know it wasn’t portraying a gay couple but it did have some of that subtext and coming from a conservative country like Korea, that was monumental. It was a portrayal of love at its purest form. He simply loved her for the merits of her character above all else. My big take away was that no matter what your requirements are for a significant other, when you fall truly in love those things could end up floating a way in the breeze. Love is just that powerful.

Eventually he did find out he was a she, Not like it could stay a secret forever. 😛 Overall, I don’t think that takes away from the confession.  And for people who wished an actual gay couple had been the focus, all I can do is hope that the line keeps getting pushed so that one day you get that. You never knows, it may happen in the near future. 🙂

All in all, I think this point could have been made in other different ways too but I found this way to be a very unique, thus my love for crossdressing dramas started. ^_^ If you haven’t watched it yet you can find it legally and for free here.

  6. Definitly a super touching drama that has aged really well in the drama world. I absolutely love the idea of falling in love with the person not the gender/sexual preference and this drama really showed a true love. I think the fact that he accepted and fell for the character when it was a boy really sets this apart from other gender bender dramas. I loved the more recent Bromance but that Tdrama had the male lead know that the female wasn’t a man before he fully fell in love/confessed. Still a really good drama but it didn’t have the special love without boundaries type of emotional impact. Plus I really have liked every drama with Yoon Eun-Hye as the lead and as we all know Gong Yoo is a superstar.

    Coffee Prince is one of my favs.

    My favorite tropes are love/hate relationships and deception themes (which is why I probably enjoy cross-dressing tropes as well).

    There’s nothing like a love/hate relationship to keep the tension and excitement high.

    Deceptions themes where one lead character misleads or poses as something he/she is not in regards to the other lead also keeps the stakes high and this my interest.
