Often times I feel when people make one of these they tend to put too much emphasis on the dramas they themselves love. Usually that is because they wanna hook you onto the same things, you know to further support them. Which of course there is nothing wrong with that but I would love to try something different. That is why for my approach I would like to instead share with you some resources to get you right into the kind of things YOU would like. Meaning that whether you have been thinking about making the jump for awhile now or are just a passerby who ended up on this post by mistake, I hope this can help you on the right path to the magical place that is Dramaland.  🏖

What are Kdramas?

But first in case you are a random passerby who has no knowledge of what Kdramas are, I will give you a brief explanation. They are basically T.V. shows that happen to come from Korea. Simple right, so what is so special about them? Well some of the common praises they have received are that they tend to have a strong focus on character development, relationship building(specially romantic), and don’t go on and on(usually only being between 16-24 episodes). At this point some of you may be thinking to yourselves, “but I’m not really all that into romance though.” My reaction to that is  😮 Really?… Don’t worry though because I know people have different tastes in things. That is why I feel it is important to let you peeps know that even though Kdramas have gone on to be associated with Romance, there are actually ones that DON’T focus on that too. There are actually a variety of genres and sub-genres.

mydramalist

That is where mydramalist comes into play. One of the things you will need to start things off is find a drama that is suited specifically to you. In order for that to happen you will need a place with a big catalog of dramas and a good filtering system. If you are big on anime this site will sound familiar because it is the counterpart to myanimelist, which is pretty popular within the anime community. The reason to use the site is because you can look through popular dramas, the highest rated ones, look through favorite genres, and you can even look for dramas from other Asian countries as well. It also has reviews and comments from fans themselves. Best of all you can use their site to create lists and keep track of the things you are watching!

Dramafever and Viki

Right after you have some dramas on your list you can head over to dramafever or Viki to see if they carry them. These websites/apps are 100% legal and they carry a lot of dramas that you can watch for FREE. Only a select few are locked behind paywalls and even then a lot of them become free after they have been out for awhile. So the only reason you would need to pay anything is if you find ads annoying. I don’t, so I’ve managed to use these sites for years now with no problems. 🙂 In all honesty these two streaming sites are probs all you need to get started but I think mydramalist has those extra features that I think make it worthwhile to get on there first. Plus the next thing on this list is also a nice extra to have. 😀

Kdrama Amino

What little extra thing am I talking about? That is the Kdrama Amino app. I recently reviewed the Kpop counterpart and this one is pretty much more of the same except it focuses on Kdramas. I think it’s important because once you watch some dramas it would stand to reason that you would want someone to talk to about them. That can be hard if you don’t have any friends that are into them. I mean I am always here if you wanna chat with somebody about Kdramas but that may not be enough. 😛 That is why this app can come in handy, you can read/write posts, take part in quizzes/polls, and even get on their public chats and immediately start talking with other Drama addicts.  It’s not as active as the one for Kpop but you can still meet some cool people on there.

#Bonus

As a bonus I would like to throw in dramabeans into the mix. It’s a good site if you wanna get some news, reviews, recaps, etc. I have been going there for awhile now and their community is very positive. They also have a podcast they put out from time to time. The main ones there have been watching dramas for many years now and it’s interesting when they talk about how dramas have grown and changed over time, they’re full of all sorts of knowledge. At the moment they are my go to place for recaps for that reason. I feel their comments always add something to the dramas I watch.
