I did it peeps. I finally went through with it and started watching this drama. Woo-hoo! Aren’t you all just so proud of me now. 🙂 *pats self on the back* lol Only seen the first ep but already I’m digging the direction this is going and feeling the overwhelming need to talk about it. Usually I’d wait until I’m done with a show to review it but this first ep has got me mad buzzin’ with how much I liked the cinematography, the characters, and how interesting the story is sizing up to be already. From the little I’ve seen this has got loads of potential to deliver both a good romance and also bring on the political intrigue too.
Thus to put it shortly, no way can I hold onto these thoughts all to my lonesome self, at least not for very long anyways. So yeah if you’re intetested in all the cray cray incoherent ramblings that went through my mind while watching this keep reading on! Obviously some spoiler warnings are in effect. Please do keep that in mind while reading this.
With that out of the way, can I first start by saying that even though it’s been out for awhile and soooo many people have talked about it, somehow I surprisingly managed to go in pretty blind. I think the only things I knew prior were that IU was in it. But how could I not given she’s one of the few kpop solo artists I follow. 😀 And also I knew it would have a time slip element in there somewhere. What I didn’t expect however was how early said element would be introduced. 😮 It was as if the drama was like, “Come on. Come one. Let’s get to the good part already.” As a result it felt like it kept moving specially at the beginning and I wasn’t bored once. 😊
At the start this was pretty much like here’s our heroine, look how sad she is over her crappy life( going though relationship struggles an all). With her life only sounding worse by the minute the more she spoke aloud about it. Only for it to get even crappier when this kid who was hanging out nearby minutes before nearly drowns in front of her. You would think people would notice somethin’ like that and be quick to help but nope not in this case. Luckily our heroine was there for the rescue. Hooray for Super IU! Except wait, no, the setup isn’t done there because a weird total solar eclipse happens out of nowhere and oh noes our lead suddenly drowns…. say whaa O_O A-huh and that’s how she mysteriously goes back in time. You see, lots of happenings and that’s within the first 10 minutes alone!
Speaking of which let’s take a step back to talk about this drowning scene first. I did like it overall but I’m curious about one thing, why this supernatural event only effected her. 🤔 Before that nothing seemed out of the ordinary. I mean I did expect them to do the “drowning and being teleported to the past” thing since it’s been a common trope lately. However she clearly showed she could swim and had already saved the kid. So why was she suddenly pulled underwater like that, I thought it was a bit awkward? Idk maybe I’m missing something that they will explain later on or maybe I need to re-watch that part again.
Either way, I liked the scene for the most part. I thought the way they recorded that shot was beyond words. As she was sinking down and you could see the eclipse over her and then again underneath her was breathtaking. And I really Loved the cutaway to Wong So’s perspective in the past. Nice combo of visual effects and editing right there.
Tho it leads me to another quick question. So when she “arrives” in the past was it dumb luck, or should I better say for her and you peeps watching at home, awesome luck? 0_o Cuz of all the places she could have ended up, she shows up were all these Princes are in the middle of washing up and are practically naked. Lol 😆 Seriously what are the odds. Also BTW apparently she’s now IN the body of a royal member later revealed to be Hae Soo, correction Lady Hae Soo(gotta put that respect on the name lol). Yeah seems like that’s exactly what went down, meaning I don’t think a “real” Hae Soo is gonna be poppin’ out of nowhere later to surprise us.
If so that brings me to yet a NEW train of thought. Cuz when she appeared it looked like Hae Soo’s friend/servant(?) was already there looking for her. That can only mean that the actual one from that period was purposefully there when our lead somehow jumped into her body. … Thus meaning, the OG Hae Soo must have been a “peeping tom” wanting to see some six-pack abs or something when you think about it. Lol Say it ain’t so. If anything that’s the biggest question that needs to be addressed from here on out! Jk not really don’t take that too serious 😆hahaha Ok moving on.
What I thought was actually the funniest out of everything tho was in fact how at first she thought she had died. Since it was real quick after she came to the conclusion that no that would be far too crazy to be true, only to then to realize the even wackier truth. That nope while she might not be dead, what did happen was she just traveled back in time and is now in the body of this person who could be a descendant of hers instead. Yup much more logical and sensicle. 😛 And to make matters worse, I know how could things possibly get worse. Not even a full episode in and she got herself a rival already that hates her. Not any ol’ rival either but a Princess. That’s gotta be record time and equally record breaking bad luck right there. Although that’s funny too in its own sad way. Because even though she clearly is higher up in the social rankings now than before, her life STILL ain’t easy. Looks like she can’t catch a break anywhere can she. 😐
As for the Princes themselves, while we may have gotten LOTs of them, we didn’t get much in terms of character development just yet. Not that I’m worried because this looks to turn into some Game of Thrones type sh*t down the line with the crazy amount of potential kings we got here. Like you already had a poisoning attempt of somebody in this episode, so I can imagine things getting “Real” sometime soon.
But let’s now rewind abit and talk about the standouts. There were two of them. The 8th prince Wang Wook, and the 4th Wong So whom I believe is the actual lead in this. And it’s interesting because right now their roles seem reversed to me. Allow me to explain. Normally in this kind of drama I would expect the 8th to be our lead while 4th would be like the crazy second lead who would win us over with their tragic back story later on, but you know NOT get the girl. That said I do know we can get some prickly male leads in dramas but here’ the thing in this case, so far he seems really hard to redeem. For example, the dude killed a fxxcking horse didn’t he!? O_O” Hard to imagine how they can bring him more down to earth after that! I guess that’ part of the fun tho, you don’t know what to expect going forward which in turn makes his journey all the much more interesting.
And already they showed hints of wanting to win the audience over by giving us a sneak peek into how fudged up his upbringing was. Like that scene where the mom had him hostage and starts fighting with his dad. That shizz was pretty sad yo. I winced when the two of them were fighting over the knife she had in her hand and she accidentally cut poor Wong so’s face. The angle it was shot in and the blood spatter effect made it seem so real. I can only begin to imagine what other stuff the character has gone through.
So here on out I’m kinda expecting them to do a switch on us where you will grow to like him and maybe the 8th prince will go down a dark road later on. Or maybe not,. Maybe they expect us to think that way and the 8th prince wont go bad at all. Idk really. At this moment he seems cool enough, I liked how confident the actor portrays him and for now he does seem like a nice enough guy. The only problem is I see that he’s married and my love triangle sense is tingling, but enough on that. 😅
If only there was one true negative to be had in all this it would only be that they did one of my biggest pet peeves. They kept our two leads apart until the very end of the episode. Not fair at all. I just hate when they do that. I always like to get a good feel for what our main leads chemistry is gonna be like and it’s hard to do that with them apart you know. But anyways as you can see this drama really engaged me. It didn’t feel like anytime was wasted and kept chugging a long at a solid pace. And that shot at the end were Wong So grabbed onto our female heroine was enough to make me want to go straight into the next episode. So Touché you ultimately did win production team. haha
I will give this first ep an 8.5/10. One of the best first eps to a drama I have seen in quite a while. 😀 Now enough of my ramblings. Have any of YOU watched this drama already or at least the first ep? Did you have similar thoughts the first time you watched? Did you feel I missed out on anything, let me know in the comments. I need somebody to talk to about this!
In the meantime if you’ve never watched/heard of this drama before, here’s a 6 minute extended look:
